I still remember the first time I indulged in chocolate and cherry porridge; it was a cozy winter morning, and I was craving something warm and comforting. As I stirred the creamy oats with rich cocoa powder, the vibrant color of the frozen cherries caught my eye, promising a delightful contrast. The moment I took my first spoonful, I was pleasantly surprised by how the sweet and tart cherries complemented the chocolatey goodness, creating a breakfast that felt more like dessert. Topped with a dollop of creamy yogurt and a sprinkle of crunchy nuts, this chocolate and cherry porridge transformed my morning routine into a delightful ritual. With just a handful of simple ingredients, like porridge oats, milled seed mix, and a touch of maple syrup, it’s the perfect way to treat yourself while still starting the day on a nutritious note. So, let’s embrace those chilly mornings with this warm, indulgent bowl of goodness!

Chocolate & cherry porridge

Ingredients

  • 175g frozen cherry fruit
  • 1 tbsp superfine sugar (optional)
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • ½ tsp cornstarch
  • 50g rolled oats
  • 2 tbsp ground seed blend
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (modify for preferred sweetness)
  • 220ml reduced-fat milk
  • 2-3 tbsp plain Danone Skyr yogurt
  • 15g finely chopped pistachios or walnuts

Instructions

Step 1

In a small saucepan, combine the cherries, caster sugar, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat for 4-5 minutes until softened, then mix a bit of cherry liquid with cornflour and stir it back into the pan to thicken.

Step 2

In a saucepan, combine oats, seed mix, and a pinch of salt. Sift in cocoa powder, then add maple syrup and milk. Cook over medium-low heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring until thickened.

My Tip

For a richer flavor in your porridge, try toasting the cocoa powder in the saucepan for about a minute before adding the oats and milk. This will enhance its depth and give your chocolate and cherry porridge a delightful, warm aroma.

Leftovers

To store your chocolate and cherry porridge, let it cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It’ll keep well in the fridge for up to three days. When you’re ready to enjoy it again, reheat gently on the stovetop with a splash of milk to bring back that creamy texture.

Make It Your Own

For a delightful twist, swap the frozen cherries for diced fresh peaches and use honey instead of maple syrup for a sweeter, summery vibe. The combination of cocoa and peach will bring a lovely balance to your porridge!
